MH17 was an international flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur that went down on 17 July 2014 over disputed territory in Ukraine, a war zone at that moment. All aboard the plane perished.

Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 (MH17) was an international flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur that crashed on 17 July 2014. All aboard the plane (283 passengers and 15 crew) died.

According to the preliminary report by the Dutch Safety Board, it was "penetrated by a large number of high-energy objects from outside the aircraft" which is a very cautious way of saying it was shot down.

At the time of the crash, MH17 was flying over eastern Ukraine, an area where pro-Russian separatist rebels were fighting the Ukraine government.

No one has claimed the attack on MH17 yet, and many questions remain.
