Jul 7, 2018 at 8:35 comment added Eagle0600 A subset of licenced premises must supply water "free of charge" and "by means other than a water tap located in a toilet facility." All other premises follow the "free of charge or at a reasonable cost" rule. Source: Liquor Regulation 2002, Section 27A.
Apr 25, 2018 at 17:29 comment added KRyan In the northeast US, at least, I have never seen an establishment charge for water, even from a self-service beverage fountain. Pretty much every place I’ve been to has even had a separate set of (smaller, plastic, usually clear rather than branded) cups for water, available for free on request (with the purchase of something else, anyway). My wife tends to drink water by preference, and she takes it for granted that she can ask for a cup for water. I can’t recall a single time that this request was treated as anything out of the ordinary.
Apr 22, 2018 at 4:19 comment added user I remember that Sonic used to charge for water. They started offering water for free, probably to make their restaurant more appealing to customers. (This is the free market)

Dec 12, 2014 at 19:12 comment added Hagen von Eitzen As the pricing rule for Queensland is quoted ("should not cost more than a glass of soft drink"), the German situation might be extended to state that some nonalcoholic drink must be available at a lower price than the cheapest alcoholic drink. I'd have to find the exact norm, though.
Dec 11, 2014 at 2:52 comment added Ken Y-N Does anyone know the official Japan situation? Just about all non-upscale restaurants provide and actively refill water (or green or buckwheat tea) glasses for free without asking, and bottled water is a rarity on menus, at least in the kinds of places I frequent...

Changed "Europe" header to "Continental Europe" to explicitly exclude the UK. Bolded territory names for easier reference. Improved wording and linked region in many cases. Rearranged links to bottom for easier markdown reading.
Dec 10, 2014 at 16:35 comment added magnattic Good job, just a little confused why UK is not in Europe. ;) I added the German situation.

Added North America and United States boilerplate. I researched California law directly on-line but couldn't find anything, so I put it under "no known regulations."
