Jul 13, 2021 at 15:41 comment added user53816 @Caleb - Per the provided definition, violence requires intent. As I stated previously "intent is much more difficult to filter for" -- requiring knowledge of the thoughts of those involved. Intent would reject defensive use. The term gun violence sparks controversy because it implies violent crime. The population which does not intuit suicide and/or defense from gun violence is significant. Why reject the less controversial term gun related? This is relevant because this answer focuses on the connotation of the claim.
Jul 12, 2021 at 21:54 comment added Caleb @psaxton violence means behavior involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone or something. I don't think there's any requirement that the perpetrator and victim be different, and I think most injuries from a gun are violent, whether self-inflicted or not, and whether fatal or not. The term is obviously more inclusive than deaths, which makes sense the the context of an article that describes not only deaths (up to 233 now) but also injuries (618).
Jul 12, 2021 at 19:30 comment added user53816 I feel my comment above is both relevant and necessary as the answer focuses on the connotation of the term violence rather than disputing gun related deaths.
Jul 12, 2021 at 19:27 comment added user53816 @Caleb If the headline were "gun-related" I don't think there would be an argument to be made. I'm torn, however, because "gun violence" including suicides where other forms of suicide are generally not considered a form of violence as exemplified in your own comment "gun-related, drug-related, or car-related". Intent is much more difficult to filter for, though I find it notable that car-related incidents are often separated into "accidents", "[attempted] suicide" and "road rage"
Jul 11, 2021 at 4:15 comment added Caleb @BillyC. If someone dies by gun, by pills, or by car, that death should be called gun-related, drug-related, or car-related. Whether it’s a homicide, suicide, or unintentional is orthogonal to the matter; the person is dead, and their death happened how it happened. Homicides are not the only deaths we should be interested in preventing.

Jul 10, 2021 at 23:42 comment added Billy left SE for Codidact @Caleb We're in a sad state of affairs where true information has become confusing. How did we get here? When someone takes their own life with prescription medications, is that a pharmaceutical death or a suicide? I think we'd all, obviously, call it a suicide, and not blame pharmaceuticals. Yet someone decided to throw that reasonable logic out of the window when guns for involved, and it couldn't be any more obviously a desperate attempt to inflate the numbers. TRUTH MATTERS here, so we're not including suicides, nor visits to shooting ranges as gun violence.
Jul 10, 2021 at 21:54 comment added Caleb Stats about gun violence and gun-related deaths in the US almost always include suicides; reporting numbers that don’t include suicides without explicitly saying so would be confusing to most readers.

Jul 7, 2021 at 19:35 comment added user53816 I've suggested an edit. If someone could find a study of people's connotation of 'gun violence' and ammend "much of the audience" with a value and link it would be appreciated.

Jul 7, 2021 at 8:57 comment added Oddthinking It is clear from the comments that the definition of violence varies between readers. However, a claim is not wrong just because you prefer a different definition than with the (clearly stated) definitions the claimant used. If you want to argue (with references) the claim is true, but misleading to some readers, that would make a good answer, but currently this is purely subjective. Note: Your current reference currently doesn't support your argument.

Jul 7, 2021 at 4:28 comment added user11643 You bring up a good point (that accidents are included [perhaps suicides are also]), but give no evidence of the quantity of accidents. Readers are left to assume the gravity of this fact, which will likely be colored by biases. Please improve this answer accordingly or we'll have to delete it for quality reasons.
