Jul 9, 2018 at 19:57 comment added Elise van Looij Friesche Vlag no markets its condensed milk as a staple food, but as a treat, to flavor (iced) coffee or make caramel.
Jul 9, 2018 at 19:49 comment added Elise van Looij @DoktorJ There's also technological progress to be considered. These days I can buy preserved milk that tastes good and won't go off for months or years for a price lower than fresh milk. The cans of condensed milk I grew up with with (and are probably also the ones used in Indonesia) are "Friesche Vlag Gecondenseerde Volle Melk Met Suiker" (google it, site is in Dutch) and have been around since 1913. They contain 55 grams of sugars (milk naturally also contains sugars) per 100 ml. I rarely buy them because they are too delicious -- like melted ice-cream but smoother.
Jul 8, 2018 at 22:24 comment added Chris Stratton @supercat it seems like the sugar does help in preservation. Canned sweetened condensed milk was common during the American Civil War in the 1860's while unsweetened evaporated milk variety dates from around 1889 and has a shorter shelf life.
Jul 8, 2018 at 5:03 comment added Legion600 @JayCe UHT milk is sold in the US under the Horizon Organic, Organic Valley, and Natrel brands. It is also used by Hershey in its shelf stable flavored milk drinks.
Jul 8, 2018 at 2:17 comment added JayCe @ElisevanLooij what about UHT milk? Very common in France for instance but nowhere to be found in North America.

Jul 7, 2018 at 9:40 comment added T.J. Crowder As @AnoE was probably subtly suggesting, the answer could use an opening sentence along the lines of "Yes, condensed milk contains milk."
Jul 6, 2018 at 23:27 comment added supercat @DoktorJ: High concentrations of sugar can act as a preservative, which is why foodstuffs like honey and syrup can be stored at room temperature without spoilage. I don't know if the sugar concentration in condensed milk is sufficient for such purposes, but I would guess that it probably is, and that it usefully served that role in an era before it was practical to package evaporated milk in single-use containers or refrigerate it after opening.
Jul 6, 2018 at 16:59 comment added Doktor J @ElisevanLooij I'm pretty sure evaporated milk or powdered would serve the same purpose, but without packing the added sugar of sweetened condensed milk. Sure the SCM tastes better, but EM/PM are healthier since, reconstituted, they're basically just plain milk (1 cup of reconstituted SCM contains nearly 80g of sugar!)
Jul 6, 2018 at 14:48 comment added Elise van Looij In a hot climate where many people do not have refrigerators, tins of sweetened condensed milk are the safest way to store and consume milk.
Jul 5, 2018 at 20:06 comment added FrownyFrog @Fizz my bad, you’re right
Jul 5, 2018 at 20:02 comment added days of love iff good genes @FrownyFrog: actually the page you probably wanted to show me is id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susu_evaporasi
Jul 5, 2018 at 18:30 comment added days of love iff good genes Out of curiosity, and since the article you link doesn't mention it, what is "evaporated milk" (i.e. unsweetened condensed milk) called in Indonesian?
Jul 5, 2018 at 18:20 comment added user3067860 @GEdgar Evaporated milk and condensed milk are different--yes, I know the ingredients are almost the same, but it's not really obvious from the end result.

Jul 5, 2018 at 17:00 comment added jamesqf @AnoE: Yes. Indeed, it contains more milk than milk does :-) Just as e.g. brandy contains more alcohol than the wine it's made from.
Jul 5, 2018 at 16:43 comment added days of love iff good genes @GEdgar: I think you're misreading that. The 0.5% refers to the substances to the right, not to mlik.
Jul 5, 2018 at 16:18 comment added GEdgar In PET Evaporated Milk, the ingredients are listed as: "Milk, Contains 0.5%Or Less Of : Dipotassium Phosphate and Carrageenan, Vitamin D3" ... foodfacts.com/ci/nutritionfacts/milk-and-milk-products/…
Jul 5, 2018 at 16:04 comment added AnoE So, does Condensed Milk Contain Milk?
Jul 5, 2018 at 14:56 comment added user11643 The same happened in the u.s. in the 50's. The popular Burns and Gracie show was sponsored by Carnation Condensed Milk and regularly encouraged replacing regular milk with it. I don't know if such marketing became illegal, but it no longer happens.
