Nov 18 at 13:19 comment added phoog @MarchHo indeed, the assumption in this answer that the cartoon is the origin of the story is entirely unwarranted. It's perfectly likely that the cartoon was drawn to illustrate (and to make a joke of by exaggeration) a true story of a factory producing only large nails because of the way its performance was measured.
