I occasionally like to answer other peoples' questions, and when I solve a difficult problem, I like to share it with the world.

comment Can we only think about 11 relationships at a time?
Sounds like something made up on the spot. Definitely doesn't qualify as a notable claim.

comment Can young children safely eat cooked mushrooms?
Maybe they meant "young children must not be allowed to eat psychedelic mushrooms"?

comment Is there a such thing as “starvation mode”?
I don't see any answers in the other question that confirm or deny the existence of 'starvation mode'. Also, any answer here has nothing to do with the 6-meal-a-day-strategy question, which simply asked whether the diet was effective, regardless of the mechanism - be it preventing the body from entering 'starvation mode' or be it something else.

This is a good question that does not yet have a good answer.

comment Does black seed oil help treat various cancers, asthma, epilepsy, liver conditions, high blood pressure and more?
+1 for getting mad about bad research, bad science, and bad writing.

comment Will a small cut heal faster when “aired” periodically, or should it always be bandaged?
Finding a lot of yahoo answers saying to let it air out, finding lots of news articles saying that this is a huge mistake, still looking for something with references though.

comment Mobile towers pose serious hazards?
Also related: Can microwave ovens give you cancer? Basically, all the speculative calculations in that presentation are irrelevant because those frequencies of radiation have no ionizing radiation impact

comment Do “probiotics” have health benefits?
I've been fooled! Good thing I never cared enough about my health to buy this crap anyway.

comment Do cats and dogs have saliva that has antibacterial or antiseptic properties?
+1 Yay links to journal articles with abstracts.

comment Do 70% of Marijuana users also use while working?
Regardless of the fact that this can't discredit the original claim, these are certainly much more 'telling' statistics - and if anything point out just how weak and meaningless the original claim is. Besides, "the Illinois State Police" isn't exactly a reputable statistics office.

comment Do dogs commit suicide at Overtoun Bridge?
From that wikipedia resource: "The female owner went out for the day while the dog remained at home. The owner was instructed to return home at a time chosen by the researcher and to do so in a taxi so as not to provide any familiar car sounds. Just 11 seconds after she was told to go home, the dog moved to the window, where it could look out and await her arrival. It remained there the entire 15 minutes it took the woman to travel home, proving, says Dr Sheldrake, that thoughts and intentions can be transmitted to dogs." What a joke.

comment Is wood harvested during a full moon (“moon wood”) better for musical instruments?
To be clear, I didn't mean the force of the moon's gravity on the water droplets is negligible compared to the force of the moon's gravity on the ocean, I meant it's negligible compared to the other forces acting on the water droplets.

+1 for having such good resources and graphs, -0.5 for generalizing, +0.5 for being upfront about it!

comment Does intermittent fasting improve immune function through autophagy?
@Konrad Rudolph I see where you're coming from. So to close the logic gap, I have to show either that intermittent fasting promotes autophagy in infected cells where it wouldn't otherwise be triggered, OR that the promotion of autophagy in healthy cells improves to immune function.

comment Does intermittent fasting improve immune function through autophagy?
Here's a handy wikipedia like summary citing 7 journal articles: "Autophagy plays a key role in the prevention of aging, cancer and neurodegenration but also in the innate immune system against intracellular pathogens. Autophagy has been shown to interact with pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), such as the Toll-like receptors (TLRs)." invivogen.com/family.php?ID=274&ID_cat=2&ID_sscat=115

comment Does intermittent fasting improve immune function through autophagy?
Here's another: "The importance of autophagy for cell survival has long been appreciated, but more recently, its essential role in both innate and adaptive immunity has been characterized. Autophagy is now recognized to restrict viral infections and replication of intracellular bacteria and parasites... Thus, the immune system utilizes autophagic degradation of cytoplasmic material, to both restrict intracellular pathogens and regulate adaptive immunity." cell.com/immunity/abstract/S1074-7613%2807%2900340-8 Innate and Adaptive Immunity through Autophagy, July 2007, Immunity 27(1)

comment Does intermittent fasting improve immune function through autophagy?
@Konrad Rudolph: How about the following resource: "In addition to "simple" breakdown of pathogens, it has also been shown that at least in some cell types (plasmacytoid dendritic cells) autophagy play a role in detection of virus by the so-called pattern recognition receptors (PRR), which are part of the innate immune system." From:sciencemag.org/content/315/5817/1398.abstract Title:Autophagy-Dependent Viral Recognition by Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cells. March 2007, Science Magazine, 315(5817), pp. 1398-1401 .

comment Does intermittent fasting improve immune function through autophagy?
The protocol for intermittent fasting followed was from Anson, R.M., Guo, Z., et al., 2003. Intermittent fasting dissociates beneficial effects of dietary restriction on glucose metabolism and neuronal resistance to injury from calorie intake. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 100, 6216–6220.
