If I purchase a soda in NYC there is an automatic deposit that is included in my purchase. What if I recycle the can, and and don't return it? Who keeps the deposit?

I was told that the supermarket might keep it. The idealist among us said they earmark it for a government program.

What happens to unredeemed deposits?

The government is kind enough to hold on to it in case you should ever decide to return it. It is not a tax its a deposit. – Chad Nov 11 '11 at 21:10
