It's generally understood that the USDA's Food Guide Pyramid, originally published in the well-known graphic form in 1992, was at the time of its publishing outdated, gives misinformation, and at worst, can lead to obesity and health problems. It was updated in 2010.

The current "pyramid".

According to current nutritional science, does the current food pyramid that the USDA has been promoting ensure proper dietary nutrition, or does it still fall short as claimed in this article?

As the pyramid is now a plate, is this question still relevant, or did the USDA answer your question by changing what's at the end of the link? – nalgenegirl Jul 7 '11 at 2:33
Basically the article you link offers you much better answer than the accepted answer below(based on cursory reading of the linked article). – Illotus Jan 16 '12 at 14:21
This question is now obsolete, as it is asking about the food pyramid that has since been replaced with a plate. – Sam I Am Mar 1 '12 at 3:01
The person behind the original food pyramid strongly resisted the final version that was actually published. Some detail here, which I found VERY interesting: whale.to/a/light.html – Highly Irregular Oct 15 '12 at 0:45
